Israeli blocking of AP images shows ambiguity in law that threatens coverage

NY – Israel’s blocking and seizure of an Associated Press video camera that provided a live look into Gaza alarmed many journalists, who on Tuesday expressed fear that there are more implications for coverage of a war that, for To begin with, it largely takes place out of sight of the world.

After extensive condemnation, including a call from Joe Bien’s government for Israel to back down, authorities returned the AP team on Tuesday afternoon. Israel justified its action by arguing that the agency violated a new media law that censors Al Jazeera, since the Qatari satellite channel is one of thousands of clients that receives live video from the AP.

By Wednesday morning, the PA’s live video from Gaza was back in Israel.

The seized camera, placed in the southern Israeli town of Sderot, is not the only one the AP operates in Israel or Gaza — the company did not specify how many it frequently uses — nor is the AP the only news organization to do so. Agence France-Presse (AFP) confirmed that he frequently uses such cameras in Israel and also sells his images to Al Jazeera.
