Jamaica begins to feel hurricane conditions as Beryl approaches

Hurricane conditions are beginning to be felt Wednesday afternoon in Jamaica as Tropical Cyclone Beryl begins to enter the region.

According to a news bulletin issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to At 2:00 p.m., Beryl was located at latitude 17.3 North, longitude 76.9 West while moving at a speed of 18 miles per hour (mph) toward the west-northwest.

The system’s maximum sustained winds decreased slightly, reaching 140 mph. However, the atmospheric phenomenon maintained its current category four hurricane classification.

Due to its speed, Jamaica could be hit for a longer period than the Lesser Antilles.

NHC forecasts indicate that for the moment the island would face the possibility of a storm surge that would raise sea levels six to nine feet above normal as well as four to eight inches of rain with the possibility of 12 inches in isolated locations..
