Japan launches weather alert system to prevent heat deaths

Tokyo – The Ministry of Environment of Japan has launched this Wednesday a weather alert system for days of high temperatures that may pose a health risk, given the increase in deaths linked to the heat in recent years.

When this alert is activated, municipalities must open public facilities designated as “refreshment shelters” such as libraries or civic centers, as explained by the Ministry.

In addition, when dangerously high temperatures are expected, the Ministry will issue a notice the day before urging the cancellation of sporting and other events taking place outdoors, and whenever sufficient measures to prevent heat stroke cannot be guaranteed.

The Ministry will analyze the specific situation of each Japanese prefecture based on the “heat stress index”, calculated from factors such as temperatures, the intensity of the sun’s rays and the percentage of humidity in the air.
