Jenniffer Gonzalez and Jesus Manuel Ortiz win

Jennifer Gonzalezof the New Progressive Party (PNP), and Jesus Manuel Ortizof the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), won the gubernatorial candidates last night, ahead of the November general elections, after defeating, respectively, the incumbent Pedro Pierluisi and Juan Zaragoza, in a primary event marked by setbacks with the counting and disclosure of the early vote and failures in electronic counting machines.

Precisely, the questions with the disclosure of the results of the early vote in the PNP prevented, for several hours, a definitive trend from occurring, despite the Gonzalez team’s claim that, ultimately, the modality of voting by mail would be similar to what was reflected in person.

“It was a difficult challenge, taking into consideration that it was an incumbent government and from my own party”said Gonzalez, shortly after 11:00 pm, from her campaign committee in Hato Rey, in her first statement as an official PNP candidate for governor.

Minutes before, from his committee, in Miramar, Pierluisi accepted his defeat and wished Gonzalez “success.” “I grant that this race was won by the resident commissioner, and I congratulate Jenniffer Gonzalez for having achieved her aspiration of being the official candidate for governor of the PNP, in this electoral cycle,” declared the outgoing president.
