Joe Biden will present the Medal of Freedom to Hispanic astronaut Ellen Ochoa

Washington— He US President Joe Bidenwill present this Friday afternoon the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 people, including the astronaut Ellen Ochoathe first Hispanic woman to travel to space.

Ochoa, a Californian of Mexican descent, participated in a nine-day mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1993. She would later be named director of the Johnson Space Center of the POTlocated in Houston (Texas).

Biden will also present the medal, the highest civilian decoration in the United States, to Teresa Romero, the president of the Farmers Union (UFW, in English), the largest agricultural union in the country. Romero was the first Latina to chair a national union.

Swimmer Katie Ledecky, winner of seven Olympic goldswill be another of the 19 people who receive the medal.

Other recipients will be former Vice President Al Gore (1993-1999), former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, former Secretary of State John Kerry or the influential African-American congressman James Clyburn.

You will also receive the medal former New York mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg.
