Judge fines Donald Trump for violating gag order and warns him of possible jail time

NY – A judge declared on Tuesday donald trump in contempt of court and fined him $9,000 for repeatedly violating a gag order that prohibited him from making public comments about witnesses, jurors or other people linked to his trial in New York over accusations that he tried to suppress unfavorable news. The judge also warned Trump that he could go to prison if he continues the practice.

Prosecutors reported 10 violations, but Judge Juan M. Merchan determined there were nine. Still, the ruling is a sharp rebuke to the former Republican president, who had insisted he was exercising his right to free expression.

Merchan wrote that he is “acutely aware of and eager to protect” Trump’s free speech rights, “particularly given his candidacy for the office of president of the United States.”

“It is critically important that the defendant’s legitimate free expression rights are not violated, that he is able to fully campaign for the office he seeks, and that he is able to respond to and defend himself against political attacks,” Merchan wrote.
