Justice requests to paralyze federal lawsuit against police officers for review of legal representation

The Department of Justice of Puerto Rico requested this Thursday the suspension of the federal civil lawsuit against police officers in relation to the death of the teenager Javier Antonio Cordero Nevarez16 years old, during an intervention in August 2022.

In a motion, Justice explained that the request is due to the fact that initiated a review process to determine whether to maintain or revoke the officers’ legal representation in the federal lawsuit.

The request arises one day before the deadline established by federal judge Camille Velez Rive to answer the lawsuit, filed by Sheila Nevarez Chiclana, mother of the minor who was shot.

The Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) presented, on behalf of Nevarez Chiclana, a claim for damages against officers of the Uniformed High Command, as well as against Sergeant Angel Alicea and agents Giovanny Santiago Aviles, Luis Velez Mari, Carmen Cacho, Felix de Jesus Flores, Roseanne Ruiz Cisneros, Kevin Melendez Monsegur and Paola Farria Santiago.
