Lawmakers propose investigating Wednesday’s blackout

A resolution to investigate the blackout recorded this past Wednesday will be filed in the House of Representatives.

This was announced by the representative Victor Pares, who questioned Genera PR’s handling of the situation. The resolution will seek to specifically investigate the causes that forced the departure of units 1 and 2 of the Aguirre Central, in Salinas, which caused over 105,000 customers to be left without electricity service at night.

“Genera (PR) has indicated that it was an ‘unusual’ event on Wednesday night. Those are big words that cannot stop there. We are dismayed about what could happen to the other plants given what happened yesterday. It is assumed that the systems are working better, since million-dollar investments have been made with federal funds, so there has to be an explanation and the People deserve that,” added Pares, in a press release.

He noted that on Thursday morning General PR spokesman Ivan Baez did not rule out the possibility that it could have been sabotage and that hours later he said it was a “mechanical failure.”

“The event two days ago requires a concrete explanation,” said Mendez. “The explanations provided by Genera Puerto Rico suggest that there was a mechanical failure, this after they said it could have been ‘sabotage.’ “We believe that an investigation should be opened immediately.”
