Louisiana approves bill that seeks to classify abortion pills as dangerous substances

Miami The state of Louisiana became the first to USA in passing a law that adds two drugs to induce abortion to the state list of controlled dangerous substances, and will thus punish its possession without a medical prescription with jail and fines.

The measure, promoted by Republicans, was approved last Tuesday by the Lower House and today by the state Senate, and now only depends on the signature of the governor of Louisiana, Jeffrey Martin Landryfor its promulgation.

Doctors and reproductive rights advocates have expressed alarm over the controversial measure, which includes mifepristone and misoprostol, two drugs used to terminate pregnancies, in Schedule IV of the Louisiana Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Act.

In this state, abortion is prohibited, and therefore both medications are prescribed.

The new law punishes possession of any of these drugs without valid prescriptions or orders from medical professionals with up to five years in prison.
