Macron calls on political parties to form broad coalition before naming new prime minister

ParisThe French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday he would wait for the country’s political parties to build a “republican” majority in the National Assembly before he could decide on a new prime minister, after no party won a majority in Sunday’s legislative elections.

Macron made the comments in a letter published by several French media outlets, at a time when political leaders from various parties are trying to portray themselves as the only solution to the current political turmoil following the inconclusive results.

Nobody has won”, Macron said in the letter. “No political force has obtained a sufficient majority on its own and the blocks or coalitions that emerged from these elections are all minorities”he claimed.

Macron called on parties that adhere to “republican institutions, the rule of law, parliamentary rules, a (pro)European orientation and the defence of French independence” to build a consensus.
