Man charged with beating Denmark’s prime minister

Copenhagen – A Pole was charged on Wednesday with attacking Danish Prime Minister last month, Mette Frederiksensaid the attacker’s lawyer.

The 39-year-old man approached Frederiksen in a square in the center of Copenhagen June 7th and He hit her in the upper left arm. The Prime Minister suffered only minor cervical trauma.

Henrik Karl Nielsen, a lawyer for the suspect, whose name has not been released, told The Associated Press in an email that the man will plead not guilty and that he does not remember the incident.

Frederiksen was immediately taken to hospital for a check-up, and cancelled her work programme for the following days, including her appearance at events related to the European Parliament elections.

The man was charged with assaulting a public servant or a person performing a public duty, Nielsen said. If convicted, he faces fines or up to eight years in prison. A trial is scheduled for August 6 and 7 in Copenhagen.

Danish media have said the man was likely under the influence of drugs and intoxicated at the time of the incident, which occurred in the late afternoon.
