Man fined for jumping on orca from boat in New Zealand

Sydney – A man has been fined in New Zealand with about $365 for jumping from a boat into a killer whale in a “stupid” attempt to try to touch the animal, reported the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

In a video provided by the authorities, it is seen how the man, identified as a New Zealander in his 50s, deliberately jumped into the water when an orca was swimming next to the boat on the coast of the city of Auckland.

“I touched it (…) You recorded it,” the man shouts to a group of people who were on the boat, and then tried to swim a second time next to the orca, a male specimen that was next to a breeding, in an incident that occurred in February.

“This is stupid behavior and shows a shocking disregard for the orca’s well-being. It is extremely irresponsible (…) “Orcas are powerful animals, and this could have ended badly, either with the orca injured or with the man attacked by the animal.”Hayden Loper, chief researcher at the Department of Conservation, said in a statement.
