For Maria Fernanda “Marife” Torres2023 has been a year of “relocating” certain things in your game.
Although her goals set at the beginning of the year have not been completely met, the Puerto Rican golfer remains positive and doing the work.
“This is part of the sport. Work never stops here. We are a work team that does not go away,” the 28-year-old player told El Nuevo Dia.
After failing to make the cut in the Kroger Queen City Championship of Cincinnaticorresponding to the LPGA Tour, the Puerto Rican is now getting ready to compete starting this Friday in the Guardian Championship, in Alabama, tournament that he already won in 2022.
Unlike the Kroger Queen City Championship, the Guardian Championship is part of the Epson Tour, which is the official qualifying tournament for the LPGA.
“I love the area. I like the countryside. But it’s still a new year. You have to play all 54 holes. This is not an easy thing, you have to do the work,” added Torres, who in his career has finished three times in the ‘Top 10’ on said tour.
With a season of ups and downs similar to today, Marife won the last edition of the event with a total of 202 strokes, 14 under par, and only recorded two bogeys, making 16 birdies.
That was his first victory as a professional.
But beyond becoming obsessed with this specific tournament, Torres explained that he thinks long term.
“I don’t want to (win) one, I want them all. I am ambitious. “I don’t want to focus on just one result,” she said.
“It doesn’t stop here. I have made several changes and adjustments. “I don’t want to be the same player, I want to be better,” she added.
Torres has four events left in the year, including this weekend.
“There will be two from the Epson Tour and another two from the LPGA. There is always opportunity to improve. I’m trying to do it week by week. To be able to enjoy every shot. “That makes a difference,” he highlighted.
“Thank God I have a good status that allows me to play both tournaments. I feel more mature. There are many positive things happening, even if they are not reflected in the results. I have to stick with the process. They haven’t been the easiest years, but I have learned. It’s been almost 20 years playing this sport. “Sometimes you have to work hard to learn,” she said.
With the intention of going to Santiago 2023
On the other hand, Torres said that, for the moment, his intention is to represent Puerto Rico in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
“So far, I am going,” he said.
Both the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games do not add points in the world ranking, which is ultimately what gives the ticket to the Olympic Games.
“I represent the island every day. But whenever I have the chance to also do it at these events, I will do it. As long as it does not conflict.”
Torres was part of the Puerto Rican delegation in the recent Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as well as the Central American Games in Veracruz 2014 and the Pan American Games in Toronto 2015. Likewise, in San Salvador 2023. There she won the silver medal, the first female medal in that sport. for Puerto Rico.
“I have work to do, if I want to qualify for the Olympics,” he said.
The Puerto Rican is ranked number 593 in the world ranking.
60 players qualify for Paris 2024, the first 15 in the rankings directly. Countries cannot be repeated.
In Tokyo 2020, the Puerto Rican closed in position number 48.
