Masoud Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon who served in parliament, is Iran’s president-elect

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — After the passing away of Mahsa Amini in 2022, Iranian lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian wrote that he wasIt is unacceptable in the Islamic Republic to arrest a girl for her hijab and then hand over her body to her family.”.

Days later, as nationwide protests and a bloody crackdown gripped the country, he warned that those who were “Insulting the Supreme Leader… will create nothing but lasting anger and hatred in society.”.

The positions adopted by Pezeshkian, now the 69-year-old president-elect of Iranhighlight the dualities of being a reformist politician within the country’s Shiite theocracy, always pushing for change but never radically challenging the system overseen by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

After Iran’s presidential election on June 28 saw the lowest turnout in the country’s history, Pezeshkian won 16.3 million votes to conservative Saeed Jalili’s 13.5 million, taking the second round on Friday. Now Pezeshkian must convince a public enraged by years of economic woes and bloody repression that he can make the changes he promised.
