Mexico seeks to expand passenger train network to US border

Mexico plans to expand the passenger rail network to the north through new lines that will connect Mexico City with the border with USA and with Guadalajarathe second largest city in the country.

The future president Claudia Sheinbaum The German state-run company said on Wednesday that three new railway lines are planned, which will initially take advantage of existing freight train rights-of-way with the aim of building parallel tracks for electric passenger trains that can travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour and which would presumably run within walls.

“Our goal is to have trains similar to the Mayan Train to the north”Sheinbaum said.

An initial estimate of the costs is $26 billion, a figure that seems small if one takes into account that the Maya Train, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s flagship mega-project that is still unfinished and with more than 1,500 kilometers, has already required an investment of more than $30 billion.
