Military plane carrying Malawi’s vice president and nine other people disappears

MalawiA plane military in which the vice president of Malawi and nine other people were traveling disappeared on Monday and a search is underwayreported the presidential office.

The plane carrying the vice president Saulos Chilima51, left the capital, Lilongwe, but failed to arrive at Mzuzu International Airport, about 230 miles to the north, about 45 minutes later for the scheduled landing.

Air authorities lost contact with the plane when it “left the radar”according to the statement from the office of Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera, who ordered a search operation and canceled a trip to the Bahamas.

“All efforts to establish contact with the plane since it left radar have so far failed,” indicates the statement.

Chakwera was informed of the plane’s disappearance by General Valentino Phiri, head of Malawi’s armed forces. The president has ordered national and local authorities “carry out an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft”according to his office.
