Municipal administrator of Guanica demands government agility in response to the 2020 earthquakes

The municipal administrator of Guanica and candidate for Popular Democratic Party (PPD) to the House of Representatives for district 21, Omar Pachecourged this Saturday the administration of Pedro Pierluisi to expedite the evaluation process of claims still pending four years after the earthquakes that impacted southwest Puerto Rico.

In addition to making a direct call to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA, in English) and the Central Office of Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3, in English), Pacheco demanded an effective distribution of funds to address the situation.

On the other hand, he mentioned as vital and imperative to promote the recovery of Guanica, Yauco, The Marias, Slabs and big bed sheettowns that make up its district and that were severely affected in a territorial strip that remains seismically active.

“According to (COR3), there are 1,617 pending projects, the vast majority in planning and design. The slowness in the execution of these recovery works, when we have thousands of families still without a safe roof, is inhumane and unacceptable. Citizens require energetic action and above all progress in the execution of projects throughout the region,” he declared.

He also claimed that the government must guarantee that the work advances in a timely manner, eliminating obstacles that threaten the stability of thousands of Puerto Rican families.

“The mayors and their work teams have demonstrated remarkable determination and responsiveness in the midst of adversity. But at the central level it is essential that bureaucratic barriers that hinder project execution be eliminated. Each affected family has already experienced the pain of destruction, heartbreak, sadness and the torment of seeing ruins, which they achieved with great effort for many years. It is not fair that they also have to be victims of a deficient government aid system,” said Pacheco.
