New Florida law prohibiting abortion in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy is now in effect

The ban on most abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy, a deadline in which many women don’t even know they are expecting, went into effect Wednesday in Florida.

Dr. Leah Roberts, reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist of Boca Fertility in Boca Raton, said anti-abortion laws enacted in Florida and other red states are vaguely written by people who don’t understand medical science.

The rules affect not only women who wish to have a therapeutic abortion, that is, a procedure to terminate viable pregnancies by personal decision, but also non-viable pregnancies of women who wish to have children.

“We stand between them and their doctors and prevent them from getting care until their lives are literally saved, sometimes at the expense of their fertility,” Roberts said.
