New York: Man charged with giving child fireworks that caused fire

A New York man has been charged with arson after giving an 11-year-old boy fireworks that ignited a shack and two homes on Independence Day, police said.

According to the Nassau County Police Department on Long Island, Karamjit Singh33, told the boy that He set off fireworks outside the home Thursday morning in Levittown, but they failed to work and set the shack on fire.The flames then spread to Singh’s home and a neighboring house, causing extensive damage.

No injuries were reported. Singh was arrested without incident and the boy was left with a relative, police said.

According to court records, Singh is being represented by the Nassau County Legal Aid office. A message seeking comment was left there. Singh is charged with arson, neglect and endangering the welfare of a child, among other charges.
