Non-teaching employees set a date for a possible strike at the University of Puerto Rico

With a unanimous vote, members of the Brotherhood of Exempt Non-Teaching Employees (Heend) approved on Wednesday the authorization to implement a strike vote in the University of Puerto Rico (UPR)which implies that the organization’s board of directors could declare a strike at any time given the refusal of the university administration to ratify its new collective agreement.

“We have exhausted all avenues for dialogue and negotiation. Our labor protections are at stake, and we cannot allow them to be violated. The strike is our legitimate and necessary response“, declared Carlos De Leon, president of the Heend.

Through a press release sent by the Heend, it was indicated that last February the group managed to resolve an impasse related to the economic stipulation that grants the members of the Brotherhood a $3,000 bonus for signing the collective agreement.

Once this obstacle has been overcome to finalize the negotiation of a new agreement, the letter indicates, The Governing Board of the UPR has not fulfilled its responsibility to ratify the collective agreement negotiated by the president of the University, Luis A. Ferrao.
