Ocean economy generated 53,736 jobs in Puerto Rico, according to NOAA analysis

A study of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, in English) revealed that, in 2021, the economy of the seas generated 53,736 jobs in Puerto Rico, with the tourism and recreation industry being the sector most dependent on the ocean.

For that same period, on the island, there were 3,607 businesses that depended on the ocean economy, according to the analysis called “Economics: National Ocean Watch” (ENOW), published this Thursday. For the first time, data referring to Puerto Rico and other territories of the United States were included, revealed the doctor Jeffrey L. Payne, director of NOAA’s Office of Coastal Management. The most recent numbers correspond to 2021.

Known in English as “blue economy”the economy of the oceans or seas comprises a range of economic sectors and related policies, and can include traditional industries, such as fishing and tourism, as well as emerging areas, such as biotechnology and marine renewable energy.
