The governor Pedro Pierluisi He will file his candidacy for re-election for the 2024 general elections on Sunday, October 1, amid growing expectations that he may be challenged in that race by Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez.
The president of the New Progressive Party (PNP) had already announced, a few days ago, that he would present his application at the beginning of October, when the community will begin the internal evaluation process of the candidates.
Today, Tuesday, his campaign team announced that the formal filing will be on October 1, at 10:00 am, at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, in Miramar, in an activity called “Puerto Rico has a Leader.” ”.
The event invitation, in which blue tones predominate, is accompanied by a “QR Code” that invites people to register.
“It is not a secret that the governor already said that he was going to aspire (for the governorship). “He is sending a clear message that he is up for re-election and that the majority of the incumbents and leaders of our party will accompany him, with the intention of continuing the work already underway.”said the former secretary general of the PNP and senator Carmelo Rios.
Although she has stated that she does not rule out aspiring to occupy the seat in La Fortaleza, Commissioner Gonzalez has reiterated that she has not yet made a decision regarding her political future.
This scenario would mean a primarist contest in the PNP for the highest elective position. Even so, the governor has said that he does not consider that possibility because a vacancy has not materialized in Washington, and he has argued that the New Progressive forces do not want a primary.
The period for filing candidacies, in accordance with the Electoral Code, begins on December 1 and extends until December 30. However, before the candidacies reach the State Election Commission, each political party must approve the candidates through a qualifying committee.
