Plan to create a transitional presidential council in Haiti advances

Prince Port — A plan to create a transitional presidential council in Haiti is moving forward after a majority of parties and coalitions submitted the names of those tasked with finding new leaders for the country, Caribbean officials said Thursday.

The names were provided by the Caribbean Community (Caricom), a regional body that is helping the transition.

“Now everything depends on the Haitians, since they are the ones who want a Haitian-led solution”Suriname’s Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin told The Associated Press. “It is up to them to take the ball and run with it, to be responsible for their own destiny.”

Ramdin spoke a day after Haitian politicians and influential figures publicly argued over the plan and which names to put forward, apparently putting the creation of the council at risk.

Caribbean leaders had announced plans to create the council after meeting behind closed doors in Jamaica on Monday with officials, including the Secretary of State for USA, Anthony Blinken. Shortly after the meeting, the Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henrypromised to resign once the council was created.
