The current vicar general of San Juan and director of the Cursillos in Christianity, father Tomas Gonzalez Gonzalezwas named this Friday morning by Pope Francis as the new auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of San Juan.

The Supreme Pontiff also appointed Monsignor Carlos Alberto Godoy Labrana, bishop of Osorno, Chile, as well as other new bishops for Croatia and Slovakia, the Vatican revealed in a bulletin.

Here in Puerto Rico, Gonzalez Gonzalez will be presented this Friday in an activity convened by the Archbishop of San Juan, Roberto Gonzalez Nieves, in the Cathedral of San Juan.

“I would like to congratulate on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Province of Puerto Rico, on behalf of the archdiocesan family and on my own behalf, Bishop-elect Tomas, for this election and designation that the Pope has made of him. Our deep gratitude to Pope Francis for gifting our archdiocese with a new auxiliary bishop. It is another sign of his love and pastoral care for the Church that is pilgrim in Puerto Rico,” the archbishop noted in written statements.

He added that “I have known Father Tomas since he was a seminarian and I was his ordaining bishop as a deacon and as a priest. Our deepest gratitude also goes to the bishop elected by his Fiat. Likewise, our thanks to the Apostolic Delegation of the Pope in Puerto Rico for their good offices.”

According to the Vatican, Gonzalez Gonzalez was born on August 23, 1968, in Santurce, and received priestly ordination on August 6, 2001 at the San Juan Bautista Regional Major Seminary in San Juan. He graduated in Administration from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and, later, in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PUCPR), in Ponce.

As a religious, he has held the following positions: Vicar of the Parish of San Lucas Evangelista (2001-2002), Member of the Council of Orders and Ministries (2005-2023), Delegate to the Council of the Regional Major Seminary of San Juan Puerto Rico (2003 -2023), Parish Priest of San Lucas Evangelista (2002-2015), Spiritual Director of the Cursillos de Cristiandad movement (2012-2023), Episcopal Vicar of the Vicariate of Rio Piedras-Trujillo Alto (2016-2023) and currently Vicar General.

It was reported that the date of the episcopal ordination of the new bishop, 55 years old, will be next November 18 in the church of Santa Teresita, on Loiza street, in Santurce, at 11:00 am

Notably Pope Francis has elected four of the six bishops who currently exercise the episcopal ministry in Puerto Rico to the episcopal ministry: Monsignor Angel Luis Rios and Monsignor Luis Miranda, both in 2018; Monsignor Alberto Figueroa in 2019 and today one more is added with the appointment of Gonzalez Gonzalez. In addition, the Pope appointed Bishop Eusebio Ramos to the Diocese of Caguas in 2017 and Bishop Ruben Gonzalez to the Diocese of Ponce in 2015.

In other words, in all the dioceses of Puerto Rico, Pope Francis has made appointments of bishopswhich shows us the closeness of our beloved Pope and his concern for the Church that is a pilgrim in Puerto Rico,” Gonzalez Nieves highlighted.
