Puerto Rican Enrique Freeman achieves historic double-double but Akron is eliminated from the NCAA tournament

Puerto Rican forward Enrique Freeman recorded a historic double-double on Tuesday in the Akron Zips’ 77-60 defeat against Creighton during the opening day of the Division 1 national tournament of the NCAA.

Freeman, MAC Conference Player of the Year and leading rebounder of the college season, finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

It was Freeman’s 31st double-double, tying him with former NBA San Antonio Spurs star David Robinson (1986) for the NCAA single-season record.

“Obviously, the praise feels good,” said Freeman, a senior, his eyes red with tears.

“We work very hard. We did something very special in Akron and I am glad we were able to represent the city,” she added.

The Zips fell to 0-6 in the NCAA tournament.

Akron came into the game as the champion of its conference and the 14th seed in the Midwest Region.
