Puerto Rico rose four spaces in the latest update of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rankingafter their participation in the FIBA World Cup 2023 in the Philippines.
The National Team is now in position 16after advancing to the quarterfinals in the World Cup competition and finishing in twelfth position with a 3-2 record. Puerto Rico is also the fifth best team in America, behind the United States, Canada, Argentina and Brazil.
Puerto Rico, which before the tournament was ranked 20th, was one victory away from overtaking the best eight in the tournament. The Puerto Ricans have not advanced to the quarterfinals of a World Cup since 2002 in Indianapolis.
The United States, for its part, rose to first place despite finishing in fourth position and out of the medal table.. Spain was at the top of the rankings and dropped to second place after failing to overtake the top eight.
Germany, the undefeated champion of the tournament, rose to third place, followed by Australia (4) and Serbia, the runner-up (5).
Canada made a significant jump with bronze and rose to sixth place, while Argentina dropped to seventh. Latvia also slipped into the ‘Top 10’ by placing eighth, after finishing fifth in the World Cup.
France dropped to ninth place and Lithuania to tenth.
Brazil appears in box 12 and the Dominican Republic improved to 18.
