Unanimously, students of Medical Sciences Campus (RCM) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) approved this Thursday a resolution to demand the immediate dismissal of the rector Ilka Rios Reyes, as well as that of the president of the institution, Luis Ferrao Delgado.
“The students expressed their discontent with the appointment that Dr. Luis Ferrao made with Dr. Ilka Rios and the ratification of the Governing Board, not considering the candidate with the highest score, who at that time was Professor Carlos Ortiz“, expressed the student representative before the University Board, Jorge Rivera.
The University Board of the UPR requested yesterday, Wednesday, the dismissal of Rios Reyes, a position that she assumed after being appointed by the Governing Board of the educational institutiondespite the fact that an investigation concluded that the doctor had violated university regulations.
The resolution approved by the student body establishes that, according to the investigation report ordered by the president of the UPR and signed by the graduate Alondra Fraga Melendezit is concluded that “Dr. Ilka Rios violated the UPR Law and UPR regulations by unduly favoring a student from the School of Medicine.Yona”.
Likewise, the resolution states that “Dr. Ferrao acts in total disregard of the UPR Law, the university regulations, the requirements of the accrediting agencies and his ministerial duty in defending the integrity of the RCM.”
For his part, Rios Reyes, in a previous interview with this newspaper about her first day as a full-time rector, minimized criticism of her appointment and reiterated that it was a group that was against her. In addition, she called the situation the campus is going through a “fictitious crisis.”
The extraordinary assembly had a quorum of between 120 and 160 students, but at the time of voting for the motions there were 108 gathered. The RCM has 2,043 students enrolled, so the quorum necessary to approve motions is 5%, that is, 102 university students.
The students also approved holding an ordinary assembly next Friday conditional on the dismissal of Rios Reyes. All motions were approved unanimously.
Likewise, it was approved to celebrate a protest next Wednesday, from 6:00 am to 8:00 am, to demand the dismissal of the rector.
Yesterday, Wednesday, dozens of students and doctors from the faculty protested in the middle of a picket line in front of the campus parking lot.
The assembly began at 4:00 p.m. and lasted until 7:30 p.m.
