Relatives of Indonesian plane crash victims criticise Boeing’s deal to avoid trial

Jakarta – A spokesman for the families of victims of the Boeing 737 that crashed in Indonesia in 2018 on Tuesday called the US aircraft manufacturer’s plea agreement to pay a fine to avoid trial and plead guilty to fraud insufficient.

The spokesman for the Indonesian families, Anton Sahadi, told EFE that the agreement between Boeing and the US Department of Justice, which includes the payment of a fine of $243.6 million, has not taken into consideration the opinion of the victims.

Sahadi said criminal liability should be higher and that the agreement does not allow Boeing to fulfill its obligation to the families of the victims.

Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace manufacturer, has agreed to plead guilty to defrauding U.S. aviation safety regulators ahead of two crashes in 2018 and 2019 in Indonesia and Ethiopia over design flaws in its 737 MAX model, which killed 346 people.
