Religious leader sentenced to 18 years in prison for child exploitation

A man who worked as a religious youth leader in Guayama, identified as Jose Bermudez Soler, He was sentenced to 18 years and five months in prison after pleading guilty to child exploitation.

During a hearing this Friday, Judge Camille Velez Rive accepted the agreement between the defense and the federal prosecutor’s office to plead guilty for causing a minor under 14 years of age to engage in illegal sexual conduct.

As part of the agreement, two charges of attempted production of child pornography and transporting the minor to engage in illegal conduct were dismissed.

The defense had requested 188 months in prison for Bermudez Soler, while the federal prosecutor’s office had requested 235 months. After hearing the parties, the judge sent him to prison for 221 months and 19 days, which will serve at the same time as a sentence he is serving in the state prison of Puerto Rico.
