Rescuers search for dozens of people missing in Indonesian landslide, killing at least 23

Rescue teams were searching Tuesday for dozens of missing people and digging through tons of mud and debris left by a landslide that fell into an unauthorized artisanal mining area on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and killed at least 23 people.

More than 100 villagers were searching for gold nuggets on Sunday in a pit at the small artisanal mine in the remote district of Bone Bolango, in Gorontalo province, when Tons of mud slid down the nearby hills and buried their makeshift camps.said Heriyanto, head of the Search and Rescue Office.

Rescuers found more bodies on Tuesday in the devastated town where the gold mine is located.

“The improved weather allowed us to recover more bodies”said Heriyanto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

According to data released by his office on Tuesday, Some 66 people managed to escape the landslide, some 23 were rescued alive, 18 of them injured, and 23 bodies were recovered, including those of three women and a four-year-old child. Some 35 people were missing.
