Rita Moreno: “If I opened doors for others, I did that by being myself”

Los Angeles – At 92 years old, still active in Hollywood and with historic milestones in her career, Rita Moreno He assures that “he does not go through life” feeling like an icon for the Latin community: “I was only there first,” he says in an interview with EFE.

The humility of the Puerto Rican actress and singer is great considering that she was the first Latina to receive an Oscar and that she is part of the select list of artists EGOTas the few who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony are named.

“If I opened doors for others, I did that by being myself. In my time there were very few Latinos in the movies, so when someone saw a Latino playing respected roles, it was normal for the community to love them,” she explains.

But Moreno, who currently stars in the black comedy “The Prank,” could not always play roles that represented diversity with dignity and part of his career was reduced to characters such as Native American princesses “even with feathers on their heads” or young Egyptian women who caricatured racial differences.
