Senate approves measure prohibiting racial discrimination against curly hair

He Senate approved this Thursday a bill to establish the government’s public policy against the racial discrimination toward the various protective hairstyles and hair textures that are often associated with particular race and national origin identities, such as braids, twists, and afros.

“Today, despite the formal abolition of slavery and the approval of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in 1948, and the approval of the Constitution of Puerto Rico, in 1952, still, People identified as black and Afro-descendant still face derogatory treatment, deprivation of opportunities, marginalization and exclusion“said the senator of the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC), Ana Irma Rivera Lassen.

He Senate Bill 1282 was presented by the MVC delegation, at the request of the young woman Alanis Ruiz Guevarawho was present in the chamber during the discussion of the measure, along with other people who have been discriminated against because of their hair style.
