Singapore authorities approve the consumption of 16 species of insects

Bangkok – Crickets, grasshoppers and worms are some of the 16 species of insects that the authorities of Singapore have been approved for human consumption, a growing trend of this cataloged as the “food of the future”.

The Singapore Food Agency announced, in a circular addressed to processed food traders and published on Monday, that it allows with immediate effect “the importation of insects and insect products belonging to species that have been evaluated” for human consumption or animal feed.

Insects that can now be imported include the common cricket, the African migrant grasshopper, the silkworm, the larva of the giant rhinoceros beetle and the European honeybee.

The Singaporean body held a public consultation on insect consumption for the first time in 2022, while it has been working since last year on creating a regulatory framework that would open the doors to this market.
