Colombian actress Sofia Vergara He leaves comedy to enter the world of drug trafficking in the series “Griselda”, based on the story of Griselda Blanco, the “narcomadrina” who taught Pablo Escobarone of the founders of the Medellin cartel, the drug “business.”
Vergara presented the series in Madrid at a press conference, where the model and actress offered a physical image very far from her character.
“Accustomed to seeing myself pretty, one of the things that has been most difficult for me is transforming my physique”, commented the “Modern Family” actress, who recalled the three hours of makeup that she had to undergo to put on a dental prosthesis, widen her nose or put on a wig.
An image change that she herself assumed because “I wanted to feel different from myself.” To do this, she wore underwear that reduced her silhouette and changed the way she walked to the point of suffering a back injury.
But What took the worst was starting to smoke at age 50. “I have never smoked in my life, Andi (the director) taught me and to do coke too,” he said with a laugh.
The platform Netflix bets again with this six-episode series, which premiered yesterday, for a story based on real events, starring and produced by Vergara.
The story takes place in Miami in the late 70s and early 80s, when Griselda arrives from Colombia after leaving behind the world of drugs in which her husband moved, but to which she ends up succumbing “because she has no money.” and it is the only thing he knows,” said Vergara.
The actress recalled that she grew up in Colombia and knew the names of drug traffickers, but she did not know that there was a woman among them. She was drawn to the story of this woman who raised four children, who at the same time was able to “love so much and become a monster.”
Along with the actress were Eric Newman, one of the producers of “Narcos” and this new series, and the Colombian director Andres Baiz, who directs all the episodes of the series.
“Sofia leaves her comfort zone and has demonstrated an acting ability on par with Tom Hanks or Robin Williams,” who successfully transitioned from comedy to drama, explained the director.
Baiz pointed out that the style and format in which it is filmed is very different from that of “Narcos,” a project that was “more political; this one is more intimate, more character”, where the complexities and contradictions of the one known as the “godmother of drugs”.
He defined Blanco as a woman in a man’s world, who seeks the respect she has never had, with a desire for power, who begins to triumph when she uses the same weapons as her enemies.
“I didn’t want to glamorize her life, but I did want to humanize the character,” said the director, and Vergara stressed that he didn’t want the viewer to “hate her from the first moment, I want people to understand her.”
Trust in the director was decisive for Vergara to take charge of the project. “I wouldn’t have done it without Andi. I had my insecurities. She is a tormented character, she was not used to working in Spanish, Going from comedy to drama has its complexity”, he stressed.
The cast, which is mostly Latino, also includes, among others, Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martin Rodriguez, Juliana Aiden Martinez or Vanessa Ferlito and supposes the debut as a performer of Carolina Giraldo (Karol G). In addition, it has Martin Rodriguez, Alberto Ammann or Ernesto Alterio.
