Spain, Norway and Ireland recognize a Palestinian state as clash between the European Union and Israel worsens

Barcelona Spain, Norway and Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday in a coordinated effort among the three Western European countries that increases international pressure on Israel to soften its devastating response to the incursion of Hamas October. Israel criticized the diplomatic measure, which will have no immediate repercussions on the war in Gaza.

The president of the government of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, declared in a televised speech early Tuesday morning that it was “a historic decision that has a single objective and that is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticized Spain on social network “being complicit in inciting genocide against Jews and war crimes.”

Ireland and Norway shortly followed in Spain’s footsteps to formalize a recognition that they had jointly announced last week.
