Spain: restaurant that collapsed and left four dead did not have permits

MADRID — A restaurant-bar in the beach tourist destination of Mallorca that collapsed, leaving four people dead, lacked the proper permits, local authorities on the Spanish island said Tuesday.

Jaime Martinez, mayor of Palma de Mallorca, told the press that, apparently, The collapse of the terrace on the first floor was caused by excess weight and poor construction work.

Two German women, 20 and 30 years old; A 33-year-old Spanish woman and a 44-year-old Senegalese man died last Thursday when the terrace warped and collapsed. The Spanish woman worked at the store, they said.

“No activity should have been carried out above (the building)”said Eder Garcia, spokesman for the fire department.

The terrace damaged the ground floor, as well as a nightclub area in the basement.
