Spanish court summons the wife of President Pedro Sanchez to testify in corruption case

Madrid – A Spanish investigating judge on Tuesday summoned the wife of the president of the government to testify in an investigation into accusations that he took advantage of his position to influence business agreements, a court in Madrid said on Tuesday.

Begona Gomez, wife of the president, Pedro Sanchez, is summoned on July 5 to answer questions.

Gomez has not yet spoken about the case publicly, although Sanchez has often called it a smear campaign to harm Spain’s leftist coalition government, which is led by Sanchez’s Socialist Party.

The investigation is based on accusations against Gomez brought by a group called Clean Hands. Although it describes itself as a union, its main activity is as a platform that initiates legal proceedings. Many have been linked to conservative causes against left-wing politicians, and most never prosper.

After the investigation began in April, Sanchez shocked the country by saying that he would consider resigning for what he called an “unprecedented attack” against his wife. After five days of silence, Sanchez said that he had decided to remain in office.
