Stampede at religious event leaves at least 60 dead in India

Lucknow, India – At least 60 people have died in a stampede at a religious event in northern India, authorities said.

More than 150 people have been admitted to hospitals after the incident in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, health official Umesh Tripathi said. The death toll could rise, he added.

The stampede occurred as attendees rushed to leave an event featuring religious leader Bhole Baba, local media reported.

Police told the Press Trust of India news agency that the stampede was due to overcrowding, but did not specify how many people were taking part.

The incident occurred about 350 kilometres (217 miles) southwest of the state capital, Lucknow.

Deadly stampedes are relatively common during Indian religious festivals, which bring large crowds into small spaces with few security measures.
