A forest fire in the high desert of Oregonnear the popular vacation destination of Bend, spread rapidly Wednesday, with authorities continually urging the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the area, known for its craft breweries, hiking, river rafting and skiing near Mt. Bachelor.

The wind-driven Darlene 3 wildfire was burning around La Pine, about 30 miles south of Bend, and spread over a 4-square-mile area. According to authorities, it was 30% contained, as the Central Oregon Fire Information site published on the X social network. Firefighters were focused Wednesday on keeping the flames within their current limits.

A video shows a huge plume of thick black and gray smoke rising above homes, shopping centers and stores. Authorities set up an evacuation center at a local high school and were working to remove horses and other animals from the area.
