Tanner Houck pitches nine innings and the Red Sox beat the Guardians via shutout

Boston- Tanner Houck pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to become the first Boston pitcher with a shutout and complete game at Fenway Park in nearly seven years, and the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-0 on Wednesday.

Connor Wong homered in the fourth inning, one after Boston scored its first run, thanks to a balk by starter Ben Lively.

Houck (3-1) walked none and recorded the first complete game of his career. The meeting lasted just 1 hour and 49 minutes.

The Boston starter was one strikeout shy of his best mark this season.

Michael Wacha had been the last Boston pitcher to record a complete-game shutout. He threw a three-hit ball to defeat the Angels in Los Angeles on June 6, 2022. And at Fenway, the last one had been Brian Johnson, with a five-hit effort against Seattle, on May 27, 2017.
