Teenager charged in shooting that killed seven-year-old boy in Chicago

A teenager in Chicago was charged with murder in a shooting that killed a 7-year-old boy who was not the intended target of the gunfire, police said.

“This violence is inexcusable,” Commissioner Larry Snelling declared Friday night.

Jai’mani Amir Rivera was murdered on Tuesday in front of the apartment building where he lived in the western part of the city. According to Antoinette Ursitti, chief of detectives, the video shows shots fired from 300 feet away.

More than 100 people gathered near the scene Wednesday night to release balloons and mourn the loss of the 8th Chicago youth, age 15 or younger, killed by gunfire in 2024reported the Chicago Sun-Times.

“All I ask for is justice,” said Jai’mani’s aunt, Vanessa Rivera.

A 16-year-old boy was charged as an adult with the crime of first-degree murder. There was a court hearing scheduled for Saturday.

“It’s unfortunate that a 7-year-old child, the son of a mother and father who are doing what they’re supposed to do, raising him, can’t even step onto the sidewalk without being hit by random gunfire,” Snelling said.
