The 9-1-1 system will have a protocol to receive calls about cases of manatees at risk and will educate on the use of watercraft

On International Planet Earth Day, the Caribbean Manatee Conservation Center announced this Monday a series of initiatives to educate about the responsible use of watercraft, as well as the establishment of a protocol in the Emergency System Bureau 9- 1-1 (NSE-911) to receive calls regarding cases of manatees that are at risk.

The collaborative efforts of the Center, together with the water motor brand Sea-Doo, The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) and the NSE-911 aim to safeguard manatees, a species of marine mammals in danger of extinction, and establish a new alert protocol in case of accidents with these animals.

“The biggest problem is that manatees suffer from impacts by boats, both motor boats with propellers and personal ones, such as personal watercraft. “We have had countless cases of animals killed by both vessels,” stressed Dr. Antonio Mignucci, director of the Center, in a telephone interview with The new day.
