The benefits of immunotherapy against lung cancer

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. cancer andn all over the world and its mortality rate is the highest among both men and women,” highlights the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell or non-microcytic, which accounts for approximately 85% of cases, and small cell or microcytic, more aggressive but less common. “The term ‘small cell’ refers to the size and shape of the cancer cells seen under the microscope,” clarify the specialists from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM).

The disease goes through different phases. Stage I is considered a tumor smaller than three centimeters that has not spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. Stage II occurs when the tumor has spread to the nearest lymph nodes. In stage III it has reached lymph nodes far from the tumor or has invaded other nearby non-pulmonary tissues, for example, the vessels in the space between the two lungs, the heart or the esophagus. Finally, stage IV implies that the tumor has metastasized to other organs in the body. “The most common are the brain, bones, adrenal glands, the opposite lung and the liver,” detail the doctors at the University of Navarra Clinic.
