Missouri, USA — Patrick Mahomes was always happy with the contract he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.
On Monday, much more.
The Chiefs have agreed to restructure the 10-year, $450 million deal they signed with Mahomes to increase his salary over the next four seasons, two people with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deal.
The renewed deal will see him earn more in the first four years and the $210.6 million in that span is the most in NFL history.
Mahomes will earn $56.9 million this season, $44.5 million next year, $50 million in 2025 and $56.8 million in the 2026 season.
At that point, the Chiefs and Mahomes — who turned 28 on Sunday in a 17-9 victory over Jacksonville — are expected to reconsider the contract, which will keep him with the team through the end of the 2031 season.
“I know how special it is to be here and I know how special what we have here is,” Mahomes said recently. “I stay away from contract stuff, but I’m lucky to be in this place and I want to go out and win as many championships as I can.”
Mahomes set the market’s foundation with his original extension with Kansas City, which remains the largest contract in the NFL. But several quarterbacks exceeded his annual salary, leading to renewed talks about his deal.
The inflated contracts began with Deshaun Watson’s $230 million deal with Cleveland last year. Jalen Hurts agreed to sign for $255 million with the Eagles and Lamar Jackson signed a five-year, $260 million extension with the Ravens. Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million deal with the Chargers.
A week ago Joe Burrow of the Bengals signed for 275 million and five years to become the highest paid player per year in the NFL, averaging 55 million.

Mahomes is coming off what is the best season of his career, throwing for a franchise record 5,250 yards, along with 41 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions. In the playoffs he showed his resilience when he injured his ankle in the divisional round against the Jaguars, but he led the Chiefs to the superbowl.
Mahomes aggravated his injury against the Eagles, but helped his team win its second Lombardi Trophy.
