The federal Senate ratifies the new ambassador for Haiti in the midst of the crisis

Washington – He United States Senate ratified this Thursday the appointment of the diplomat Dennis Hankins as the new ambassador for Haitiin the midst of the worsening social and political crisis in the Caribbean country.

With 89 votes in favor and one against, the Upper House confirmed Hankins in the position, more than two years after the position was vacant following the departure of former ambassador Michele Sison in October 2021 and the subsequent resignation of the special envoy for the country, Daniel Foote.

The latter left his position in protest against the government’s decision to continue deportation flights of migrants to the island and against what he described as a “deeply erroneous” policy towards Haiti.

Hankins, who has worked in his country’s embassies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea and Mali, will assume this role at a critical time for Haiti, following the resignation of the prime minister, Ariel Henryand an increase in gang violence.
