In January 2018, a class broke the tricentennial attendance record Yale Universityone of the most prestigious and expensive in USA. Interest began even before the professor, cognitive scientist Laurie Santos, walked into the room for the course she called “Psychology and the Good Life.” Within three days, 1,200 students, nearly a quarter of the university’s total that year, had enrolled in the class, which continues to be taught today.

The impact allowed Laurie to create an online version, with more than 4 million students around the world, and gave rise to the weekly podcast “The Happiness Lab”, which has already launched more than 170 episodes. All this for a reason that seems trivial, but that affects many more people than you imagine: people have difficulty feeling happy.

“I created the course when I became aware of the mental problems of young people. An investigation showed that, among university students, more than 40% spoke of depression, more than 60% of anxietyand one in ten said they had considered suicide”said Laurie, at a conference at South by Southwest (SXSW), the world’s leading innovation festival, held in Austin, Texas.
