The mayor of Toa Baja, Bernardo “Betito” Marquezindicated that the former mayor of Catano Felix “el Cano” Delgado is the “owner” of the business where a massacre occurred on Monday night.
For their part, local residents denied that this information is correct. Without wanting to speak to the cameras or identify themselves, they assured that they are the owners of the commercial premises.
The events occurred at around 10:03 at night, in front of the La Casita del Arbol business, in the Campanilla neighborhood, in Toa Baja.
From a vehicle that stopped in front of the commercial premises, several people shot at those present, killing two men and two women, while five people were injured and are in serious condition.
One of the injured was Delgado’s brother, reported Colonel Roberto Rivera, head of the investigative branch of the Police.
According to Marquez, municipal police who arrived at the scene on Monday night saw that Delgado was at the scene at the time of the events.
“I arrived on the scene. When I arrived, my fellow Municipal Police officers told me that yes, he was present, that one of the injured is his brother. When they are going to transport the brother in the ambulance, he goes with those in the ambulance, accompanying the brother,” said Marquez.
“It’s not that (Delgado) arrives. “He was already there,” she added.
Meanwhile, Rivera said that Delgado was listed as vice president of the corporation registered as the owner of the business, but that they needed to corroborate if that documentation has not been updated. El Nuevo Dia verified the Registry of Corporations of the Department of State, which in fact indicates that the corporation La Casita del Arbol LLC was registered on October 20, 2023. Its president is Carlos Lopez Gonzalez and its vice president, Felix Delgado Montalvo .
According to the Toabajeno mayor, Delgado has been related to the business for approximately almost a year.

“Cano is the administrator of that business. What has been established is that, I don’t know if he says ‘owner’, but he is the manager of the business,” Marquez said. “In street slang, he is the owner. In official terms, he is the administrator.”
Likewise, he assured that the commercial premises had never been related to any similar situation.
“When I learned about the transition that occurred between the former owner and Cano, the reality is that we have not really had any type of incident,” Marquez noted. “When Cano took it, it began to move more, to have more frequent visitors to the business, but until this point, we had not had any type of situation in the business.”
As Marquez spoke to the media near the scene, a young man in the distance exclaimed, “I am the owner,” but declined to offer additional comments.
Delgado is under conditional release conditions with a bail set by the Federal Court in San Juan, after pleading guilty in November 2021 for corruption during the period he was mayor of Catano.
Regarding the balance of the crime, Marquez expressed that “it is an extremely regrettable, terrible situation that we are dealing with four dead and five injured.”
“In Toa Baja we have been working on an effort for citizen participation, quality of life, which has been done with a lot of sacrifice, but in a very positive way. But events like this set us back because they create hopelessness, indignation, insecurity… There are so many ‘create’ that I don’t have time to define them all. “It is unfortunate,” he said.
“We cannot let our guard down. This is a regrettable case in Toa Baja and has occurred in other places in Puerto Rico. We have to find a way to tackle this situation and that these are symptoms of a series of problems that we have to work on as a country,” he stated.
