The horror film “The Nun II” was the highest grossing this weekend in North America with $32.6 million in receipts, Warner Bros. reported this Sunday.
This is a sequel to the film released in 2018. This time, it was screened in 3,728 theaters in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
The film, directed by Michael Chaves and starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid, didn’t gross as much as the first version ($53.8 million), but it’s still a solid release. “The Nun” movies are part of the so-called universe “Conjuring”which already has nine films and $2.1 billion at the box office.
“The Nun II” left second place to “Equalizer 3″ (with Denzel Washington) in its second weekend. The Columbia Pictures film added $12.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $61.9 million and its international total to $107.7 million.
Third was the third version of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (Nia Vardalos) which comes 21 years after the first was an unexpected success, grossing $369 million with a production budget of $5 million. Released by Focus Features in 3,650 theaters, the third version grossed about $10 million, where it was seen mostly by women (71%) aged 25 or older (83%).
Vardalos wrote, directed and starred in “Greek Wedding 3,” which again stars John Corbett and is set in Greece.
The highest-grossing movies this weekend in theaters in the United States and Canada, according to comscore were:

9. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” – $2.6 million.
