The Pirates start with five consecutive victories for the first time since 1983

Washington— The Pittsburgh Pirates began a 5-0 season for the first time since 1983, beating the Washington Nationals with two RBI hits from Connor Joe, including a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning.

Michael A. Taylor, formerly of the Nationals, had three hits, and Bryan Reynolds, Andrew McCutchen, Alika Williams and Henry Davis each had two hits. Reynolds extended his on-base streak to 33 games dating back to last season with a single in the first inning and added a two-run double in the ninth.

Pittsburgh remains undefeated in 2024, winning all of its road games, after opening with a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. Last year they recorded a record of 76-86.

The Pirates led 3-1 entering the seventh, but backup catcher Riley Adams, playing for the first time this season, tied the game for Washington with a two-run homer off reliever Roansy Contreras, who nevertheless took the win. (1-0).
