The Pope calls drug traffickers “murderers” and condemns drug legalization laws

Vatican City, Rome — He Pope Francisco On Wednesday, he called drug traffickers “murderers” and called drug liberalization laws a “fantasy” in a speech on International Day United Nations against drug consumption and illegal trafficking.

Francis dedicated his entire weekly catechism lesson to reflecting on drug abuse. He called for increased prevention and treatment efforts for addicts. and said that they are children of God who deserve to have their human dignity respected.

Francisco worked for years as a pastor in neighborhoods of Buenos Aires where “paco,” a cheap drug made from cocaine residue, wreaked havoc on the community. The Argentine Jesuit has long made it a priority to visit recovering addicts during his visits abroad.

On Wednesday he deviated from his usual reflection on a biblical topic to mention the countries and programs that he said were doing a good job raising awareness among young people about the dangers of drug use and the “scandal” of drug trafficking.
